Amy Birnbaum, MDFellowship-trained Hand & Upper Extremity Surgeon

Amy Birnbaum, MD is a Hand and Upper Extremity Orthopedic Surgeon with special training in microsurgery.

Dr. Birnbaum provides a broad range of surgical treatment for the hand, shoulder, arm, elbow, and wrist including fracture care, joint replacements, ligamentous and nerve repair, tumor surgery and arthroscopy.

Dr. Birnbaum grew up outside of Philadelphia and attended Pennsylvania State University. She went on to obtain her masters at Rutgers in Biomedical Sciences prior to medical school. She attended Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School where she was elected to the AOA honors society and graduated with a distinction in medical education.

She completed her Orthopedic Surgery Residency at NYU Langone Orthopedic Hospital. Dr. Birnbaum then completed a Hand and Upper Extremity Fellowship at Harvard Brigham and Women’s Hospital & Boston Children’s Hospital. She has special training in microsurgery as well as pediatric hand surgery.

She has a special interest in ‘wide awake local anesthesia no tourniquet’ (WALANT) and minimally invasive surgery. Dr. Birnbaum strives to provide comprehensive care for diseases and injuries to help restore function and relieve pain for her patients, as fast as possible and with as little discomfort as possible.

Dr. Birnbaum has published multiple articles to benefit the scientific community in upper extremity care. She is an active member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, American Society for Surgery of the Hand, and the American Association for Hand Surgery.

Dr. Birnbaum lives in Manhattan with her husband and beloved Old English Sheepdog, Marvin.
